A simple and quick fix for a great side dish. When you have so many exotic and pricey cheeses, fancy, designer mac and cheese can cost up to $50 to make, but they aren’t always the greatest taste. This recipe is both inexpensive and delicious.

This baked mac and cheese is a family favourite that both kids and adults enjoy. For the ultimate in cheesy taste, it uses a mix of cheeses that are piled in the dish as well as melted into a thick and creamy cheese sauce. This recipe is ideal for a cosy supper or as a holiday side dish!

It’s almost universally regarded as comfort food, and there are countless variations! In fact, I nearly didn’t post this recipe because there are so many other mac and cheese recipes out there, and most people already have a favourite.

Of course, there is no “correct” or “wrong” method to cook mac and cheese, so here are just one of the ways to make this delicious mac and cheese :

Recipe

It can be intimidating to make homemade mac & cheese if you’ve never done it before. But don’t worry, we’ll break it down for you and walk you through each step!

Drain the pasta once it has been boiled.

  1. Combine a fat (butter) and a starch (flour) to make the cheese sauce, then mix in the milk products.

2. Cook until the sauce is lovely and thick.

3. Stir in the shredded cheeses well.

4. Combine the cheese sauce and the cooked pasta in a mixing bowl.

5. Half of the mac and cheese should be transferred to a baking dish and topped with more shredded cheese.

6. Top with the remaining macaroni and cheese, as well as more shredded cheese.

7. Bake, then get ready to savour every bite!

Some Useful Tips :

  1. When boiling the pasta, cook it for a shorter time than usual. I like to cook my elbow pasta for 4 to 5 minutes in a pot of salted water. In the oven, the pasta will continue to cook, and you don’t want it to get mushy.

2. If possible, use room temperature drinks… It takes longer for cold liquids to thicken than it does for warm liquids. While the water for the pasta is coming to a boil, I normally set out my milk and half-and-half.

3. Choose your favourite cheeses! The cheddar and gruyere used in this recipe are our personal favourites, but you can get creative with the cheeses you use.

Mozzarella, gouda, smoked gouda, swiss, Monterey jack, Colby jack, There are several reader comments below the recipe that discuss the cheeses that were used!

4. Shred your own cheese — I know it’s a bother, and the pre-shredded cheese in the packets is so tempting. However, those cheese packets contain a starchy ingredient that prevents the cheese from clumping, as well as preventing it from melting properly.

 Storing And Reheating

  1. Any leftovers should be refrigerated and carefully covered. This method of storing mac and cheese will keep it fresh for 3-4 days.

2. Stir in a splash of milk or cream and reheat in the microwave, partially wrapped with plastic wrap. As it reheats, give it a good stir every now and again.
