When it comes to enjoying some delicious rum drinks, you need to know a few key things. Whether you’re just getting into the spirit or you’re a seasoned pro, there are lots of different rum drinks that appeal to almost everyone.

While most versions of the drink taste similar, there are slight variations on the theme which make for some great drinking experiences. Read on for more information about what makes rum such a versatile beverage and what types of cocktails you can make with it.

What is rum?

Rum is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented molasses. It is produced and consumed throughout the Caribbean, the Americas, and parts of Europe. Light and dark rums are differentiated by the type of molasses used to produce the final product. Like other distilled beverages, rum is produced by combining fermented sugar cane juice, molasses, yeast, and water.

The fermentation process naturally produces a small amount of ethyl alcohol, which is then removed and replaced with water to produce the final product. Rum is typically bottled at 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume).

What makes a Rum Cocktail?

When you make a rum drink, you are using rum as one of the ingredients. Rum is great when mixing with certain ingredients, but won’t be the main focus of the cocktail by itself. In order to create a rum cocktail, you’re going to also combine a variety of different ingredients.

These can include a sweetener such as sugar, syrup, or honey; a fruit such as pineapple or lime; a spirit such as a whiskey or rum; a low-alcohol mixer such as club soda or fresh lemon juice; and ice. Once these ingredients are mixed together, you can either shake the cocktail or stir it.

Difference Between Light and Dark Rum

There are two types of rum available. Light rum is distilled from molasses and flavored with caramel and is typically bottled at 40% ABV. It’s often used in tropical drinks or mocktails. Dark rum is distilled from sugar cane and has a higher ABV and is typically used in traditional cocktails.

Dark rum is aged for a minimum of two years and is bottled at a higher proof (90-95 proof) and aged for a minimum of six years. It’s often considered the superior form of rum because of its distinct flavor and higher drinking quality. Light rum is aged for a minimum of four months and is bottled at an ABV of 37% to avoid taxation by most governments.

Proof, ABV, and aging requirements for Rum

The proof is a way of measuring the alcohol content of a spirit. The higher the proof, the greater the alcohol content of the final product. The proof is typically measured as twice the percentage of ethyl alcohol in a liquid such as rum.

The ABV of rum is typically between 40% and 80%. rum must be aged for a minimum of two years. rum must be aged for a minimum of six years. rum must be aged for a minimum of nine years.
