A Taste of Devotion: Why Prasad Matters During Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman Jayanti prasad holds a special place in the hearts of devotees celebrating the birth of Lord Hanuman—a day marked by strength, devotion, and sweet offerings shared with love.

Among the most cherished prasad dishes are boondi laddoos, golden spheres soaked in syrup and scented with cardamom, and sweet roti, also known as puran poli—a soft flatbread stuffed with jaggery and spice. These are more than just sweets. They’re part of a sacred ritual that unites families, communities, and spiritual heritage.

The Origins of Hanuman Jayanti Prasad Traditions

The tradition of offering sweets to Lord Hanuman dates back centuries. In temples and homes alike, besan, jaggery, and ghee have long been used to create offerings made with care and purity.

  • Boondi laddoos are often associated with strength—mirroring Lord Hanuman himself. They are said to be one of his favourites.
  • Sweet roti (or puran poli) varies by region but always carries the warmth of home-cooked devotion.

These treats are first offered to the deity with prayers, then distributed to loved ones and neighbours—a gesture of shared blessings and unity.

✨ Boondi Laddoos & Sweet Roti: Traditional Recipes with Meaning

🍯 Boondi Laddoos

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup gram flour (besan)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼ tsp cardamom powder
  • A pinch of saffron (optional)
  • Ghee for frying
  • Chopped nuts (optional)

Steps:

  1. Mix gram flour with water to form a smooth batter.
  2. Heat ghee and pour batter through a slotted spoon to create tiny boondis. Fry till golden.
  3. Prepare a sugar syrup with water, cardamom, and saffron.
  4. Add boondis to syrup and mix gently.
  5. Once cool, form into laddoos and garnish with chopped nuts.

🍞 Sweet Roti (Puran Poli)

Ingredients:

  • Whole wheat flour
  • Water and a pinch of salt
  • Jaggery
  • Cardamom powder
  • Ghee for frying

Steps:

  1. Prepare a soft dough from flour and water. Let rest.
  2. In a bowl, mix jaggery and cardamom.
  3. Roll dough into discs, add filling, seal and roll out again.
  4. Cook on a hot tawa with ghee until golden and crisp.

These recipes aren’t just food—they’re expressions of bhakti (devotion), passed down through generations.

Why Make Prasad at Home?

Preparing prasad yourself adds meaning to the festival. Here’s why many families still uphold this beautiful tradition:

🧘 Spiritual Connection

Cooking with intention and love brings a deeper sense of peace and devotion.

👪 Family Bonding

Making sweets together is a time for storytelling, laughter, and shared memories.

🌿 Natural Ingredients

Prasad is often free from preservatives—just real, wholesome ingredients like besan, ghee, and jaggery.

🌍 Cultural Legacy

Whether you’re in Mumbai, Georgetown, London or Toronto, these recipes tie diasporic communities back to their spiritual roots.

🌍 Where to Experience Hanuman Jayanti Prasad Around the World

Even if you’re not preparing prasad at home, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in communities across the globe, where prasad is lovingly made and shared as part of the tradition.

United Kingdom
In towns and cities with large Hindu communities, temples often distribute prasad like boondi laddoos and sweet roti after special Hanuman Jayanti pujas. Community gatherings and prayer events bring people together in devotion and shared celebration.

India
In India, the festival is widely observed with temple rituals, bhajans, and bhandaras (community feasts). Prasad is an essential part of these gatherings — often made in large batches and distributed to devotees with reverence and joy.

🌎 Global Diaspora
From Trinidad to Toronto, Sydney to Suriname, Indo-Caribbean and South Asian communities uphold this tradition by preparing prasad at home or in temples. It’s a way of staying connected to culture, even far from ancestral lands.

🌎 Diaspora Celebrations

  • In Toronto, New York, and Sydney, Indian restaurants and Hindu temples may host special events where traditional sweets are served.

Tips for a Blissful Prasad-Making Experience

  • 🕔 Start Early to keep the day stress-free.
  • 🌸 Offer before tasting—always give the first share to the deity.
  • 🥄 Use ghee generously—it enhances taste and tradition.
  • 🧂 Keep it sattvic—avoid onion/garlic to maintain purity.
  • 💛 Cook with joy—the energy you put in becomes part of the offering.

Final Thoughts: Sweetness in Every Offering

Hanuman Jayanti isn’t just about rituals—it’s about remembering strength, faith, and unwavering service. And what better way to honour that than with prasad prepared by hand and heart?

Whether it’s a golden laddoo or a warm sweet roti, every bite is a blessing shared. So gather your ingredients, say a quiet prayer, and let the kitchen fill with the scents of devotion.

✨ Wishing you a sweet, blessed, and powerful Hanuman Jayanti from all of us at CurryBien. Jai Hanuman!
