India has been a centre for art since the dawn of time. It should come as no surprise that India has a plethora of art galleries housing everything from classical treasures to contemporary classics.

Art is a great force that connects us all. It is that lovely emotion that transcends all human borders and affirms the universalization of the human soul. A great work of art has the ability to stay in our hearts for a long time. A great work of art is difficult to find yet, at the same time, impossible to forget.

There are various art galleries in India today that maintain ancient age art masterpieces while also providing a forum for young artists to showcase their talent and promote the relevance of art in India. 

Here are the Best Art Galleries in India that represent the best of arts from India

1. Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata

The Academy of Fine Arts is one of India’s most well-known art galleries. The art gallery, which opened in 1933, has housed a number of well-known and captivating paintings from around the world. Both Indian and foreign artists’ works are on display at the gallery.

Rabindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, M F Hussien, and Nandalal Bose are among the great poets whose works are on display. The most notable paintings in this gallery are Rabindranath Tagore’s “A Winter’s Evening” and “Girl With A Pitcher.” Google Maps location.

2. The Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh

Aside from paintings, this important museum in Chandigarh also has sculptures on display. The museum, which opened to the public in 1968, is divided into departments for sculpture, architecture, and art paintings.

Indian miniature paintings, contemporary art, portraits, and other sections of the museum are among the best. The museum houses paintings by renowned artists such as Raja Ravi Varma, Amrita Sher-Gil, Jamini Roy, Rabindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Abanindranath Tagore, and others.

3. Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai

The Jehangir Art Gallery, located in Mumbai, has carved out a unique niche among India’s art galleries, owing to its intimate link with the development of Indian contemporary art.

The Jehangir Art Gallery, which opened in 1952, contained the works of a number of well-known artists, including Jamini Roy and Arpita Singh. The Gallery also houses scriptures, photographs, and a variety of spectacular crafts in addition to paintings.

4. Government Museum, Chennai

The Government Museum in Chennai, often known as the Madras Museum, is India’s second oldest museum and art gallery. It was founded in 1851 and receives a large number of visitors each year.

Paintings by great artists such as Raja Ravi Varma are on show at the National Art Gallery, which is part of the museum. Traditional Tanjore, Rajput, and Mughal paintings, as well as contemporary art, can be found here.

5. National Gallery of Modern Art, Bangalore

The National Gallery of Modern Art in Bangalore, one of India’s newest art galleries, has quickly established itself as one of the country’s most prestigious art galleries.

Nearly 500 artworks by renowned artists can be found in the Gallery. There are works of both traditional and modern art in the collection. Great Indian artists like Raja Ravi Varma, Jamini Roy, and Amrita Sher-brilliance Gil’s may be felt via their paintings. 

6. National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi

India’s capital state also houses the country’s most magnificent art gallery. The Government of India launched an effort that resulted in the establishment of the National Gallery of Modern Art. This is the spot where the Maharaja of Jaipur used to live.

Since its inception in 1954, the Gallery has amassed a collection of over a thousand paintings from Indian and international artists. Jamini Roy and Raja Ravi Varma are two of the most well-known artists in the area.
